There is no single catchment rule

Each admission authority publishes its own oversubscription criteria. For many community schools the order is roughly looked after children, then children with a sibling at the school, then distance from home to school. Faith schools, academies and grammar schools add their own criteria. Distance is a tie breaker in a queue, not a boundary line.

Why the distance moves every year

Where a school is oversubscribed, the last distance offered is simply the point at which places ran out that year. It depends on how many siblings applied, how many families moved in, and the size of the year group. A street that got in last year can miss out the next.

What Ofsted grades tell you now

Ofsted inspects state funded schools in England. Single word overall effectiveness grades for state schools were removed in September 2024, and inspection reporting has moved towards graded judgements across separate areas rather than one headline label. That means older reports and newer reports do not read the same way, and comparing a recent inspection to a 2019 one is not a like for like comparison.

• Check the date of the most recent inspection. Some good schools have not been inspected for years.
• Read the areas separately, particularly behaviour and attitudes, and leadership.
• Read the report text, not just the label. It usually names the specific issue.
• Look at published attainment and progress measures alongside inspection, not instead of it.

Practical checks for a specific address

1. 1List the primary and secondary schools within a realistic travel distance, with straight line distance and actual walking route.
2. 2Check each school's admission criteria and recent last distance offered.
3. 3Check the phase you need. A great primary is no help if the feeder secondary is full.
4. 4Look at pupil numbers against capacity. A school well under capacity is unlikely to be oversubscribed.
5. 5Speak to the school office. They answer admission questions all year.

The property angle

Popular schools do influence local prices, which is why listings mention them. Just be careful about paying a premium for access that is not guaranteed. Verify the criteria before you let the school affect your offer.
